How to Make Your Own T-Shirt Yarn

You can buy T-shirt yarn in most yarn stores. Most of them are made from textile factory offcuts or recycled cotton fabrics, making them eco-friendly and sustainable options for crafting.

You can also make your own T-shirt yarn from old T-Shirts using our step by step guide here.

  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • (nr) – indicates the total number of stitches in the current row/round

Pattern Instructions

Basket

Use 7 mm hook.

Round 1:  6 sc in mr (6)
Round 2:  inc*6 (12)
Round 3:  (sc, inc)*6 (18)
Round 4:  (2 sc, inc)*6 (24)
Round 5:  (3 sc, inc)*6 (30)
Round 6:  (4 sc, inc)*6 (36)

Round 7:  1 sl st in each st (36)

Round 8: 1 sc in each sl st (36)

Round 9 – Round 14: 1 sc in each st (36)

Round 15: 1 sl st in each st (36). Finish off.

Handle

Use 6 mm hook.

Row 1 – 15: 1 sc, turn, 1 ch

Turn your handle sideways and put one sc one side all the way, then put one sc the other side all the way to give your handle a nice finish. Finish off.

Sewing pieces together

“Sew” the handle on the basket.

You can use a smaller crochet hook to weave in the ends and “sew” the handle on. (I used 4.5 mm, but you can use any hook that works for you.)
