T-shirt yarn, also known as “tarn” or fabric yarn, is made from old T-shirts or jersey fabric. It’s a great way to recycle old clothing and create eco-friendly yarn for crafting projects like crochet, knitting, and weaving. Here’s a step-by-step process for making T-shirt yarn.

Materials Needed
- Old T-shirts (preferably seamless and 100% cotton with a bit of stretch)
- Scissors
Tips for Best Results
- Use T-shirts without side seams for smoother yarn.
- The stretchier the fabric, the better the curl.
- If you want colorful yarn, mix and match T-shirt colors.
Prepare the T-Shirt
- Lay the T-shirt flat on a surface and smooth out any wrinkles.
- Cut off the top part just below the sleeves and the bottom hem to create a rectangular tube.
Cutting the Fabric
- Fold the fabric tube in half lengthwise, but leave a 1-2 inch gap at the top edge (don’t fold all the way).
- Use scissors to make parallel cuts from the bottom folded edge to the top, leaving the 1-2 inch gap uncut. Cut strips about 1-2 inches wide.
Create a Continuous Strand
- Unfold the fabric so it lays flat with slits on each side.
- To make a continuous strand, start cutting diagonally from one slit to the next. This prevents having individual strips and creates a long piece of yarn.
Stretch the Yarn
- Gently pull the long strip of fabric. The edges will curl inwards naturally, creating a neat, rounded yarn.
- Roll the yarn into a ball for easy use.
And that’s it! Now you have T-shirt yarn ready for crafting.
