  • Schachenmayr Catania (100% Cotton, 125m (137yds)/50g (1.76oz), Sport Weight) Yarn in the following colors
    • Green
    • Red
  • Crochet hook: 2.00 mm
  • Filling
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Beads

Abbreviations

  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • mr – magic ring
  • sc – single crochet
  • blo – back loop only
  • inc – increase (2 sc in next st)
  • dec – decrease (2 sc worked off together)
  • (nr) – indicates the total number of stitches in the current row/round

Size of the finished item

The finished Christmas elf is about 10 cm (4 inches) tall, if you use similar weight yarn. In case you use thicker yarn, your Christmas elf will be bigger, if you use thiner yarn, your Christmas elf will be smaller.

Body and Arms

Start with green yarn.

Round 1:  6 sc in mr (6)
Round 2:  inc*6 (12)
Round 3:  (sc, inc)*6 (18)
Round 4:  (2 sc, inc)*6 (24)
Round 5:  (3 sc, inc)*6 (30)
Round 6:  sc blo*30 (30)
Round 7:  (8 sc, dec)*3 (27)

Change color to red.

Round 8:  sc*27 (27)
Round 9:  (7 sc, dec)*3 (24)

Change color to green.

Round 10:  sc*24 (24)
Round 11:  (6 sc, dec)*3 (21)

Change color to red.

Round 12:  sc*21 (21)
Round 13:  (5 sc, dec)*3 (18)

Change color to green.

Round 14:  sc*18 (18)
Round 15:  (4 sc, dec)*3 (15)

Change color to red.

Round 16:  sc*15 (15)
Round 17:  (3 sc, dec)*3 (12)

Change color to green.

Round 18:  sc*12 (12)
Round 19:  (2 sc, dec)*3 (9)
Round 20:  dec, sc, (11 ch, 10 sl st – this creates one arm), 4 sc, (11 ch, 10 sl st – this creates the other arm), 2 sc

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Head

I used a wooden bead as the head but you can crochet one too.

Round 1:  6 sc in mr (6)
Round 2:  inc*6 (12)
Round 3:  (sc, inc)*6 (18)
Round 4:  (2 sc, inc)*6 (24)
Round 5:  (3 sc, inc)*6   (30)
Round 6 – Round 10: sc*30 (30)  
Round 11:  (3 sc, dec)*6 (24)
Round 12:  (2 sc, dec)*6   (18)

Start stuffing the head and keep on stuffing while crocheting.

Round 13: (sc, dec)*6 (12)
Round 14:  dec*6 (6)

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Eyes

Sew the eyes in row 6, 7 with 4 stitches in between.

Mouth

Sew the mouth in row 9, 10.

Hat

Round 1:  6 sc in mr (6)
Round 2:  (sc, inc)*3 (9)
Round 3:  sc*9 (9)
Round 4:  (2 sc, inc)*3 (12)
Round 5:  sc*12 (12)
Round 6:  (3 sc, inc)*3 (15)

Sewing pieces together

Sew the head on top of the body.

Sew the hat on the head.
