  • Puli (100% Cotton, 125m (137yds)/50g (1.76oz), Sport Weight) Yarn
  • Crochet hook: 3.50 mm
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations

  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • mr – magic ring
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • dec – decrease
  • inc – increase
  • (nr) – indicates the total number of stitches in the current row/round

Hat

Round 1:  12 dc in mr (12)
Round 2:  inc*12 (24)
Round 3:  (dc, inc)*12 (36)
Round 4:  (2 dc, inc)*12 (48)
Round 5:  (3 dc, inc)*12 (60)
Round 6:  (4 dc, inc)*12 (72)
Round 7:  (5 dc, inc)*12 (84)
Round 8-15:  84 dc (84)

Do NOT cut the yarn, we will continue with the earflaps.

Earflaps

Earflap 1

Row 1:  Ch 1, turn, 17 sc, place a stitchmarker, 35 sc (52)
Row 2:  Ch 1, turn, dec, 13 sc, dec (15)
Row 3:  Ch 1, turn, dec, 11 sc, dec (13)
Row 4:  Ch 1, turn, dec, 9 sc, dec (11)
Row 5:  Ch 1, turn, dec, 7 sc, dec (9)
Row 6:  Ch 1, turn, dec, 5 sc, dec (7)
Row 7:  Ch 1, turn, dec, 3 sc, dec (5)
Row 8:  Ch 1, turn, dec, 1 sc, dec (3)
Row 9  Ch 1, turn, dec, 1 sc (2)
Row 10:  Ch 1, turn, dec (1)

One earflap is done. Cut the yarn.

Earflap 2

Go back to where you placed the stitchmarker and start working on the second earflap.

Row 2:  Ch 1, turn, dec, 13 sc, dec (15)
Row 3:  Ch 1, turn, dec, 11 sc, dec (13)
Row 4:  Ch 1, turn, dec, 9 sc, dec (11)
Row 5:  Ch 1, turn, dec, 7 sc, dec (9)

Do NOT cut the yarn.

Boarder

Round 1: 1 sc to each stitch around the entire hat.

Change color if you would like to make the next round in a different color.

Round 2: 1 sc to each stitch around the entire hat. Finish off, cut the yarn.

Dinosaur / Dragon Spikes

These hats are endlessly customizable with colors and patterns. I added dinosaur / dragon spikes to mine.

Round 1:  6 sc in mr (6)
Round 2:  2 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc (8)
Round 3:  3 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc (10)
Round 4:  4 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc (12)
Round 5:  5 sc, inc, 5 sc, inc (14)
Round 6:  6 sc, inc, 6 sc, inc (16)
Round 7:  7 sc, inc, 7 sc, inc (18)
Round 8:  8 sc, inc, 8 sc, inc (20)
Round 9:  9 sc, inc, 9 sc, inc (22)

Flatten each spike into a triangle shape. Attach them to the hat. I made 6 spkies for this size.

If you would like to add ties – for toddlers who try to pull their hats off all the time – you can add them with a three-strand braid.
